WiFi Signal Strength
Wi-Fi-based systems tap into the existing Wi-Fi networks of healthcare facilities for the purpose of locating and tracking assets or individuals. Typically, these Wi-Fi-based Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) determine the location of tags by measuring the strength of Wi-Fi signals exchanged between access points and tags. They use Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values in complex calculations to estimate tag positions. The primary advantage of Wi-Fi-based systems is their ability to utilize existing infrastructure, which makes them especially attractive for large healthcare settings due to their scalability and the compatibility with already installed network access points.
It’s crucial to understand that although numerous RTLS vendors claim their systems can operate with “existing WiFi networks,” these systems frequently necessitate extra software licenses, upgrades to access points, and/or the installation of additional access points.
Wi-Fi-based RTLS systems are capable of efficiently covering extensive areas, provided that access points are positioned strategically. They typically employ high transmission power and sophisticated antenna designs. The deployment of repeaters and mesh networks can further enhance coverage, thereby amplifying the efficiency of Wi-Fi-based solutions.
